Spoiler alert -- check our company's name. So our first trip of our catering season for the last six years we have been doing Bubba's Pampered Pedalers Coast2Coast bicycle trip. We traveled across California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas (big state - 18 days to cross), Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and finally Florida! And let's not even mention that we need to make sure that the menus can't be repetitious. That can be quite a challenge during a 52 day trek especially considering in some areas grocery stores (and their stocks) can be limited! That being said, Bubbafest went on. We catered breakfast and dinner at the Boy Scout at Camp Sawyer and for three days at Boyd's RV Resort in Key West. Bubbafest is not so much a bike ride as a party on wheels... Needless to say a good time was had by all! http://www.bubbaspamperedpedalers.com/bubba-fest https://sfcbsa.org/camps/camp-sawyer/ https://www.boydscampground.com/ We headed down to the Florida Keys a week before Bubbafest (a week long ride down the Florida Keys from Key Largo to Key West and back again) to feed Bubba and his crew that came down early to help clean up the bike paths in the wake of Hurricane Irma which went though the middle Keys like a a chain saw. We stayed at Camp Sawyer (the Boy Scout Camp) for a week feeding all the volunteers that came down to clear debris not only from all the bike paths but at Camp Sawyer itself which was hit hard. Here are some photos of the devastation. It should be noted that we arrived approximately three weeks after Irma made landfall in the Keys so that should give you an idea of the amount of destruction that occurred. For a week we catered for 80+ riders in the heart of Cajun Country with all the music, and culture that Acadiana has to offer. The tour continued through historic Acadian settlements of central and eastern Louisiana. Luckily Anne had learned a lot of Cajun cooking from a family that hailed from the New Orleans area (including a Chef who had worked at Commanders Palace) so she was able to serve up some genuine cuisine for the trip (though I think some of the folks had to get used to the spiciness of some of the dishes.) And no, before you ask, no crawfish... they're out of season in October. Once more back across the country from the Black Hills of South Dakota all the way to the Washington, DC area for the Adventure Cycling Association's C&O Canal / Great Allegheny Passage Tour. Boy I tell you we we've been doing so many jobs out west with low humidity that when we crossed the Mississippi we felt like we just entered a world of wet! Anyways we catered for the approximately 80 folks that rode up the path of the C&O Canal and Great Allegheny passage from Washington, DC all the way to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A fun trip that we've always enjoyed. In fact we got our mobile kitchen just so we could (and did) cater trips like this. Just finished up catering a seven day trip for 57 riders and staff around the Black Hills of South Dakota. We started with dinner and breakfast in Rapid City and then headed to the "legendary" town of Deadwood (of Buffalo Bill and Calamity Jane fame). Then we were off to Hill City -- a quaint little town just down the road from Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Then we headed to Hot Springs -- nice town but the riders tented in a city park and we were in a parking lot that meant we were on generators the whole night -- but hey, that's what we do. Off to Custer State Park, a beautiful place that hosted the summer White House for Calvin Coolidge. Though we did see a few buffalo this year it was not like last year where we got into a traffic jam that was engendered by a herd of over 500 buffalo that decided to wander through. It's tough getting to a job through such a natural impediment! After Custer we headed back to Hill City (great place btw, Crooked Creek RV Park and Resort.) The riders then went on to their end destination in Rapid City. We stayed in Hill CIty and heading east on Tuesday to do the Adventure Cycling's C&O Canal Tour. https://www.deadwood.com/ https://gfp.sd.gov/state-parks/directory/custer/ http://www.crookedcreeksd.com/ https://www.adventurecycling.org/gui…/fully-supported-tours/ Well we made it up from Napa Valley to the picturesque city of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The trip was not without its issues... my Silverado lost all power going up a 5% grade in the shadow of Mt. Shasta, which is not fun when you're towing a 10,000 pound food kitchen. To top it off I had to wait 6 hours in 104 degree heat to get a tow truck that could handle towing both the Silverado and the kitchen. Luckily there was a repair facility nearby that was able to fix the issue (the pump that regulates air going into the diesel had to be repacked) and we were back on our way. But I digress. We were in Idaho to cater two back-to-back, week long trips around the Coeur d'Alene area. The first was the standard group and the second was a family oriented ride with kids ranging from six years or so up. Both trips averaged about 40-50 people. The trip starts out at the picturesque Heyburn State Park down the road from Plummer, Idaho. The we headed to Cataldo and camped at an RV park on the banks of the Coeur d'Alene river. After that the adult trip went on to Wallace, ID, and had a layover day to do the Hiawatha Trail. The family ride with the kids stayed in Kellogg for two days so the kids wouldn't to ride as far as the adult ride and had the added benefit of being next to a water park. Kellogg was problematic for us. We had water but had to run off generators for two days as we were in a park. After that both trips headed to Harrison, ID, where we camped at the city campground right on the shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene. A beautiful spot with swimming and a marina right at the campground. Now we have a little time off and are heading to Sundance, Wyoming to rest up and prep for the week long Black Hills of South Dakota trip.
